The Half-Zatoichi is a community-created promotional melee weapon for the Soldier and Demoman. It is a samurai's katana with a circular cross-guard with rounded notches, adorned with brown grip wrapping.

Upon slaying an enemy with the Half-Zatoichi, the blade becomes decorated in blood, and the wielder's health is instantly filled by 50% of the player's max health, which can also grant overheal to the player (100 Health for the Soldier, 110 Health to a Soldier with the Battalion's Backup equipped, 88 Health to a Demoman, and 100 Health to a Demoman with the Bootlegger or the Ali Baba's Wee Booties equipped). Like its description suggests, the player can also instantly kill another Soldier or Demoman who's wielding another Half-Zatoichi in one hit, and vice-versa. However, the weapon is Honorbound: if the player attempts to switch away from the sword without killing another player, 50 health will be deducted from the player's current health. If the player is below 50 health points, the weapon can not be holstered until the player gets a kill or they get more health. The Half-Zatoichi is also unable to roll for random critical hits.

As it is considered a sword, the Half-Zatoichi has extended melee range and a longer draw and sheath time, like the other swords for the Demoman. This makes it the Soldier's only weapon with extended melee range other than the Disciplinary Action.

Taunting as a Demoman with the Half-Zatoichi equipped will perform the Decapitation kill taunt. Successfully killing someone with the taunt will allow the Demoman to sheath the weapon without taking damage.

This item was awarded in Genuine quality to players who pre-purchased Total War: Shogun 2 on Steam before March 15, 2011.

Bugs

  • The loadout screen shows the Demoman wielding the Half-Zatoichi with one hand instead of with both hands. A Spy disguised as a Demoman wields the Half-Zatoichi one-handed as well. It may also appear invisible when selected as the active weapon wielded by a Spy disguised as a Soldier or Demoman.
  • In Mannpower, using the Grappling Hook via the action key when the player is below 50 Health will kill the player instead of not letting them use the grappling hook.
  • Taunting with Shred Alert, Fresh Brewed Victory, Rocket Jockey, or Spent Well Spirits while using the bloodied Half-Zatoichi will taunt with the RED version of the equipment, regardless of the team.
  • When switching from the Concheror to the Half-zatoichi the unsheathe sound will not play and instead default to the shovels sound

Unused content

  • An unused kill icon exists for Half-Zatoichi duel kills.

Trivia

  • Zatoichi is a fictional blind swordsman who appears in many Japanese films. The term "Half-Zatoichi" is a reference to the Demoman having only one eye, and the Soldier having his helmet over his eyes as opposed to being completely blind.
  • The weapon attribute is a reference to the legend of Muramasa, a famous Japanese swordsmith, who is said to have forged swords that, once drawn, could not be sheathed again until the blade had drawn blood.
  • When performing the Decapitation taunt kill as Demoman, the swing that decapitates the victim is performed with the dull side of the sword.
  • In the censored version of Team Fortress 2, the weapon is not bloodied after a kill.
  • Even though the katana is a two-handed weapon, the Soldier wields it with only one hand.
  • The design of the Half-Zatoichi seems to most resemble the ōdachi (大太刀) in its length and curvature, one of the many types of "katana" and Japanese swords in general. The ōdachi in particular can be considered the Japanese equivalent of the greatsword or claymore.
