Fall in, men!
The Soldier on preparing the mercenaries to parachute out of a plane

The B.A.S.E. Jumper is a secondary weapon for the Soldier and a primary weapon for the Demoman. It is a parachuting backpack with a spade decal, a sewn-on patch with a parachute logo, a red release handle, and a tag attached to a piece of rope, with the tag reading "#64". The parachute itself is greyish white, with various holes and rips on top.

This weapon allows the wearer to, whilst in midair, press the jump key (default key: Spacebar) to activate a parachute, slowing and capping their vertical descent to 112 Hammer units (roughly 37.3% of normal speed, approximately 7.72 km/h or 4.8 mph). Air control while the parachute is deployed is reduced by 50%. Pressing the jump key again deactivates the parachute, allowing players to fall normally. The player can not reactivate the parachute again after they deactivate it mid-air. Players can attack with any of their weapons while the parachute is deployed.

The B.A.S.E. Jumper can be deployed whenever the player is in the air, whether by jumping, explosive jumping, knockback, or simply falling off a ledge. Soldiers using the B.A.S.E. Jumper can successfully use the Market Gardener to land critical hits on players as long as the original jump was an explosive jump.

The B.A.S.E. Jumper was contributed to the Steam Workshop.

Bugs

  • One can craft the B.A.S.E. Jumper with incorrect slot and class tokens (i.e. Demoman class token with Secondary slot token). This is due to the B.A.S.E. Jumper being shared by both the Soldier and the Demoman while using different weapon slots for each class.
  • If a player dies with a deployed parachute, the parachute stays open while the player's ragdoll falls at standard speed.
  • The B.A.S.E. Jumper doesn't show while inspecting it from the Loadout or Backpack menu.
  • The open model of the B.A.S.E. Jumper does not appear with r_lod 1.
  • If a player quickly deploys and withholds the B.A.S.E. Jumper while starting a rocket/sticky jump, most of the vertical momentum turns into horizontal momentum.

Notes

Trivia

  • B.A.S.E. stands for Building, Antenna, Span (i.e., bridges), and Earth (i.e., cliffs); and the name as a whole is in reference to BASE jumping.
  • The back of the "#64" paper contains a note reading "I love Square", marked by three drawings, an eye, a heart, and a square, respectively. Square is the concept artist for the B.A.S.E. Jumper.
