The Soldier on the culinary arts

The Frying Pan is a melee weapon for the Soldier and Demoman classes. It appears as a slightly worn cast-iron skillet with a thin film of grease caked onto the bottom.

The Frying Pan simply replaces the Shovel or Bottle without altering gameplay mechanics, similarly to what the Lugermorph is to the Pistol. Critical hit animations are identical to the default weapons, as are the taunts.

This weapon was earned by players who purchased Left 4 Dead 2 before October 7, 2010 as part of the Sacrifice DLC. Players also received Ellis' Cap as a part of this promotion. Players who already have Left 4 Dead 2 will receive both items in the coming week.

Previous Changes

It was possible to craft this weapon using the "Fabricate Class Weapons" blueprint before the ability to do so was disabled, making the Frying Pan the first promotional item that could be obtained without qualifying to receive it.

Trivia

L4D2 Frying pan
  • This is the first promotional crossover weapon from a different Valve game, Left 4 Dead 2, to make it into Team Fortress 2.
  • This is the second weapon that can be equipped only by The Soldier and The Demoman, the first weapon being the Pain Train.
  • A similar Frying Pan was designed for the unofficial Fancy vs. Nasty Update as a skin for the Equalizer.
  • The Demoman's taunt with the Frying Pan is the same as that of the Bottle, so he drinks the Frying Pan as he does the Pain Train.
  • As a Soldier, selecting the Frying Pan, like the Pain Train, still creates the sound heard when the Shovel flips open.
  • The Frying Pan is not tradable.

    Soldier frying maggots
  • This is one of eight items available that can be obtained exclusively through other games, the others being the Big Kill, the Lugermorph, Bill's Hat, the Alien Swarm Parasite, the Lumbricus Lid, Max's Severed Head, and Ellis' Cap.
  • Players who already owned a copy of Left 4 Dead 2 before the promotion did not receive this item until several days after the announcement.
  • On The Sacrifice update page, the Soldier can be seen cooking maggots in the Frying Pan while the Scout (wearing Ellis' Hat) watches. They're sitting in part of the map Viaduct.
  • The sound used when the Frying Pan hits something is recycled from Left 4 Dead 2.
  • Despite the fact this can only be used by Soldier and Demoman, the blog post 'Free Hats!' states "(the hat and Frying Pan) know no class, color, weight or gender. They work for all peoples".
  • It might come off more powerful than the Shovel/bottle, due to the "heavy" hitsound, although it has the same stats as the default weapons.
  • This and the Ellis' Cap seem to have a variable drop rate, unlike all previous bonus/pre-order items as not all the players eligible for the items have them in their backpack yet.
  • This item does not have it's own kill feed icon, instead it shows a skull with crossbones on it. This is the second item to have this kill feed icon, the first being the Vita-Saw.
  • A common complaint about the Frying Pan is that it is too loud and rather irritating.
