The Soldier

The Righteous Bison is a secondary weapon for the Soldier. It is a handheld retro-future or steampunk styled ray gun.

This weapon fires an unreflectable projectile that delivers reduced damage against buildings but is capable of piercing through targets; it is possible to hit the same target repeatedly with the same shot as well as multiple targets in a direct line. The projectile deals damage every 45 milliseconds. It does not feature the traditional ammo reserve used by other weapons. Additionally, it can be used to light Huntsman arrows held by a friendly Sniper.

Enemies killed by the Bison or the Cow Mangler 5000 suffer a unique death: they turn black, hover in mid-air while performing a specific disintegration animation surrounded by team-colored particles, and then silently disappear.

Bugs

  • Causing an enemy Spy to feign death with the Righteous Bison will sometimes create two corpses: one 'ragdoll' corpse and one 'vaporized' corpse.
  • This weapon will not set off pumpkin bombs.
  • If a player dies before killing an enemy with the Righteous Bison, the kill icon will be a generic skull and bones and not its original icon.
  • In the client view, while crouching, the projectile will appear to fire much higher than the weapon model.
  • This weapon's projectile passes through glass, but does not deal damage to enemies on the other side.

Trivia

  • The appearance of this weapon is based on that of 'The Righteous Bison - Indivisible Particle Smasher', which can be purchased from the online store at Weta Workshop.
  • Weta Workshop held a panel at Template:W 2011, and handed out coupon codes to visitors, which could be redeemed in Team Fortress 2 for an untradable Righteous Bison.[2]
