The Demoman on turn control

The Tide Turner is a community-created secondary weapon for the Demoman. It is a worn-down ship steering wheel with various pieces broken off.

The Tide Turner, like the Chargin' Targe, allows the Demoman to perform a Charging maneuver for 1.5 seconds (or 2 seconds if equipped with the Claidheamh Mòr), with benefits including a temporary boost of speed, a shield bash, melee damage boosts which scale by distance, and the immediate removal of afterburn, bleeding, Mad Milk and Jarate. Heads gathered by the Eyelander, Horseless Headless Horsemann's Headtaker or Nessie's Nine Iron increase the damage of the shield bash by 5 damage each, at a maximum of 5 heads. Unlike other shields, the Tide Turner grants full turning control while charging, and any kills obtained with melee weapons instantly replenish 75% of the charge meter. However, being damaged while charging reduces the remaining charge time at a one-to-one ratio; for example, taking 42 damage subtracts 42% from the remaining charge meter. Being damaged at the precise moment a charge is initiated fully drains the charge meter, regardless of how much damage was dealt. The Tide Turner's downsides include its lower passive resistance to both fire and explosive damage, 15% each in this case (lower than both the Chargin' Targe and the Splendid Screen). Additionally, the maximum damage boost gained by charging with a melee weapon is only a mini-crit, compared to the critical hit gained by charging almost the full distance with the other shields.

The Tide Turner was contributed to the Steam Workshop.

Bugs

  • This weapon does not glow in the world view when crit-boosted.
  • While equipped, if the player spectates another player in first-person mode while dead, upon respawning the shield appears where the spectated player was while you respawned. The shield is non-interactive and can be seen through walls, textures, and players.
  • Getting a taunt kill with a melee weapon does not refill the charge meter.

Trivia

  • The item's name is a combination of the expression "turn the tide", meaning to change or reverse the outcome of a situation (such as a battle), and "tight turner", referring to the full turning control.
  • The Tide Turner was based on a glitch for the Chargin' Targe where a controller's analog controls bypassed the turn speed reduction of the charge that was patched later on. This glitch for the Chargin' Targe also led to trimping, as normally people would not have been able to turn fast enough to extend their air time.
