A thrown Sandvich

The Sandvich (in full, the Sandvich Edible Device) is an unlockable secondary weapon for the Heavy. It consists of two triangular slices of bread containing lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, ham, and bologna. Topping it is an Olive through a toothpick.

The Sandvich can be consumed by pressing the correct bound keys for either primary fire or taunting. Using the taunt button will allow the player to bypass the one second delay when switching weapons. When eaten, it will replenish 100% health (300 HP) over a four second duration. During this time, the player will be forced into third person as the Heavy becomes completely immobiel and emits loud munching noises. The healing given by the Sandvich does not extinguish fire although it heals the Heavy much faster than he is burned. As eating the Sandvich is considered a taunt, it cannot be consumed whilst underwater. When eaten, critical Sandviches deliver no additional benefits.

A generous Heavy can use the alternate fire to drop the Sandvich ahead of him for teammates to pick up, healing the collector 50% of his maximum health. Once dropped, the Heavy cannot gain a new Sandvich unless he collects a Medkit at full health, or returns to a resupply cabinet. Should the Heavy be killed whilst holding the Sandvich, it will be dropped as a collectible for 50 health (75 for a Scout).

Trivia

TF Industries' Sandvich Edible Device user manual
  • The Sandvich was first portrayed to the playing community in the Meet the Scout video, weeks before it was released as an in-game item.
  • Despite the Sandvich being made of bread, meat, cheese, and vegetables, it can somehow be crafted into scrap metal.
  • The Sandvich user guide says that the bread and grains group heals 20 health, the vegetable group heals 40 health, the cheese and dairy group heals 20 health, the meat and poultry group heals 20 health, and the other bread and grains group heals 20 health. This sums to only 120 health, the amount of health that the Sandvich originally replenished. The ability of the Sandvich to heal 300 points of health was added in a later update.
  • The promotional poster for the Sandvich contains a typo. The word "Health" relating to the cheese and dairy group is misspelled.
  • It is possible to drop the Sandvich while stunned by the Sandman.
  • Currently, a glitch exists where if a player taunts with the Sandvich, the cooldown meter gets stuck and does not refill until you grab another Sandvich from the resupply cabinet.
