Upon taunting with the Knife or Your Eternal Reward equipped, the Spy transfers his knife to his left hand, and begins to practice a deadly fencing maneuver, resulting in damage or death for anyone slow, unaware or simply unfortunate enough to be in the way.

Enemies hit by the first two initial swipes will suffer minimal damage and will receive knockback, whereas the last thrust is an instant kill. The taunt can kill multiple enemies if it connects on both the stabs and thrusts. Fencing can also destroy buildings upon impact.

Due to the length of the taunt, it is recommended to be used safely against oblivious targets. The first two swipes, however, will no doubt alert the enemy of the taunt and give them sufficient time to avoid it. Should it be performed around a corner, it must be executed early if there is any chance for the final thrust to make contact.

The taunt animation exists in the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game but does not cause any damage, as that version didn't recieve a Sniper and Spy update like the PC version.

Previous Changes

May 19, 2010 Patch

  • Spies can no longer perform the taunt whilst Cloaked (though it is still possible to do with extremely accurate frame-perfect precision.

Trivia

  • The Dead Ringer could also be activated whilst taunting before it was patched soon after the Sniper and Spy update, allowing you to remain cloaked after being damaged but still carry out the taunt animation (and so still able to kill people). Now, if you taunt with the Dead Ringer onscreen, it will not activate if you take damage during the taunt.
  • Fencing is a family of combat sport, using bladed weapons. Commonly in Fencing to win in a bout you must “Thrust” your opponent in the chest (or somewhere in the center-mass of the body), as the Spy does the same at the final seconds of the taunt for the kill.
