There's a long tradition of brave, kilted men running into battle with naught but a large stick and dangerous amounts of alcohol in their bloodstreams. Now you can keep this glorious custom alive and add a modern twist by attaching explosives to your improvised weaponry!
Ullapool Caber publicity blurb

The Ullapool Caber is a community-made melee weapon for the Demoman. It is a disproportioned World War-era German Template:W Stielhandgranate "potato masher" grenade, with a white Mann Co. logo stamped on the head and black wrapping tape around the stick.

With this weapon, the first hit on any solid object or enemy (including a disguised Spy) will cause the explosives in the head to detonate, dealing massive explosive damage to both the Demoman and surrounding enemies, with rampup applied, and melee damage dealt to the main target in addition to the explosion. The Demoman will be propelled directly upwards by the explosion and will likely suffer fall damage upon landing. This weapon will not explode if struck against an ally or a friendly building.

After the Caber explodes, the Demoman will be left with only the remains of the grenade stick, which deals less damage than other Demoman melee weapons. Respawning or visiting a Resupply locker are the only ways to restore the grenade to its original state.

The kill icons for the Ullapool Caber were contributed by Template:Steam profile link.

Bugs

  • The Ullapool Caber may sometimes appear detonated when it is not. This can occur after hitting a friendly building or the Resupply doors as they open. Additionally, switching to another weapon after detonating the Ullapool Caber may result in it appearing undetonated.
  • When striking an enemy, the Ullapool Caber will sometimes not deliver the explosive damage. It still deals full explosion damage to the Demoman, but it only deals melee damage to the struck enemy. While the Caber appears broken after such an event has occurred, striking an object, wall, or enemy again causes a second explosion even without returning to a spawn cabinet.
  • The weapon does not mini-crit when used with the Chargin' Targe or Splendid Screen.
  • Attacking Pumpkin bombs does not explode the Ullapool Caber. However, the model will appear to have exploded.
  • Killing yourself with the caber at the same time as being hit will show the kill icon as a caber instead of it saying you were finished off by the other person.
  • While sticky jumping with the Ullapool Caber as your active weapon, Demoman may say lines which should normally be played when you strike someone.

Trivia

  • Template:W is a town in the Ross and Cromarty area in the Scottish Highlands where the Demoman was born.
  • A caber is a long wooden pole (usually a section from the trunk of a tree) that is thrown as a feat of strength during the Template:W event of the Scottish Highland Games.
  • The description "High-yield Scottish face removal" was taken directly from the promotional artwork that Swizzle created for his entry in the Polycount contest.
  • The taunt used for the Ullapool Caber was present in game files and unused since the WAR! Update. This taunt was originally for the Bottle.
