Paint Cans are tool items that allow players to change the color scheme of hats. Not all hats are initially paintable, but are often made paintable some time after their release. Paint is available in 27 different colors. Paints are available throught the Mann Co. Store, via the Item Drop System or by opening various Crates. When buying hats from the Mann Co. Store, buyers may look at painted variants of the hats they wish to buy.

Hats can have their paint removed, restoring them to their original color. This can be done in the Backpack by clicking on the item in question and then clicking the Restore button. In doing so however, the Paint Can will not be returned to the player.

Valve has stated via the Steam forums that there are plans to implement painting with weapons, but current development priority rests on increased player interest.

The "Team Spirit" paint changes the painted item's color depending on the player's team. The listed price for "Team Spirit" is currently . It cannot be obtained via random drops, however it is found in Crate series #7 and #15. The June 23, 2011 (Über Update) added 6 new "Team Spirit" styled paints to the game.

The "Pink as Hell", "A Color Similar to Slate", "Drably Olive", "The Bitter Taste of Defeat and Lime", "The Color of a Gentlemann's Business Pants" and "Dark Salmon Injustice" Paint Cans can be found in Crate series #9. Additionally, "Pink as Hell" and "A Color Similar to Slate" can be found in series #13, "Drably Olive" and "The Bitter Taste of Defeat and Lime" in series #14, and "The Color of a Gentlemann's Business Pants" and "Dark Salmon Injustice" in series #15 Crates.

Note: Images may not exactly match the examples depicted here, as in-game lighting conditions may vary. For team-colored items, the RED model skin has been used, meaning that the painted item may appear differently when worn on the BLU team (with the exception of Team Spirit paint, in which both the RED and BLU versions are displayed).

Bugs

• Zephaniah's Greed is misspelled; it should instead say "Zepheniah's Greed".
• When using the +quickswitch command to change a users load-out, painted items are not differentiated from regular items; this means that if a user has multiple painted variants of the same hat, all the variants are ignored (they're treated as duplicates) and just one entry appears in the +quickswitch panel.
• A hat painted with Team Spirit will sometimes turn RED upon falling off the player's head at death, even while on BLU team.
• After the June 23, 2011 Patch, items painted with Team Spirit will sometimes show the RED version of the color, even if the wearer is on the BLU team. It will also cause the entire item to flicker black.
• All Paint Cans added in June 23, 2011 Patch have mixed up cans on their icons: BLU paint in RED can and vice versa.

Trivia

• The "216-190-216" in the name of Color No. 216-190-216 is the RGB representation of the color.
• Muskelmannbraun is German for "Muscleman brown".
• The Über Update added several paint cans colours that were sampled off of the existing player models. The Value of Teamwork was sampled from the Medic's backpack, Water Logged Lab Coat is from the Medic's coat, Balaclavas Are Forever from the Spy's mask, An Air of Debonair sampled from the Spy's Suit, Operator's Overall was picked from the Engineer's overalls and Cream Spirit from the Engineer's hard hat.
