The Soldier

The Detonator is a secondary weapon for the Pyro in Team Fortress 2 Beta. Currently, it uses the Flare Gun model. The weapon's alt-fire detonates the flare in mid-flight, creating a small explosion which ignites enemy players. The knock back from the explosion can also be used to enhance a jump (Flare Jump) in a manner similar to rocket or sticky jumping. Players wielding the Detonator have a 20% explosion vulnerability. It was released in the Team Fortress 2 beta on February 11, 2011.

Afterburn:

  • Base: 3 damage every 0.5 seconds for 10 seconds (60 damage total)
  • Mini-Crit: 4 damage every 0.5 seconds for 10 seconds (80 damage total)

Distance from the target does not affect the Detonator's damage. All damages are approximate and determined by community testing.

1 Note that detonated flares won't receive the Crit bonus for hitting a burning enemy.

Function times

  • Attack Interval: 2.02

All times are in seconds. Times are approximate and determined by community testing.

Update history

(Beta) February 11, 2011 Patch

  • The Detonator, a new Flare Gun, has been added. Its stats are:
    • Alt-fire detonates flare in flight
      • Does a small explosion that catches players on fire
    • 20% explosion damage vulnerability

Bugs

  • The afterburn of a flare projectile can harm a Scout under the effect of Bonk! Atomic Punch.
  • If a Pyro were to reflect a flare and hit a target who then dies from the afterburn, the kill icon will be that of the Flare Gun and not the reflected flare icon.
  • From a first person view the flare seems to fire from behind the Flare Gun, just like the Huntsman.
  • When an enemy is hit with a detonated flare the blood particles will come from where the flare was detonated, instead of the player.

Trivia

  • The Detonator was probably based off The Gentle Manne's Olde Firecannone, one of the weapons in the Advanced Weaponiser.
