Revision as of 12:28, 30 October 2019
“You are so small! Is funny to me!” This article is a stub. As such, it is not complete. You can help Team Fortress Wiki by expanding it. Notes: There is enough information in the Potato.tf announcements to write the initial report on the Contest now (rules, deadlines, judging). |
Operation Madness vs Machines is a hybrid Contest-Charity-Campaign community Mann vs Machine event organized and hosted by Potato's Custom MvM Servers that was announced on January 11, 2019.
Contents
Contest
The contest for MvM Mappers and Mission Makers was opened during January 11, 2019 with an initial contest deadline of May 15, 2019, though this has been extended to November 7, 2019. No contest rules were established, 'other than basic ethics and "common sense"'. The judging was to follow the same judging procedure as the Operation Canteen Crasher contest. While the contest is still ongoing, new submissions are no longer accepted.[1]
Charity
The event is also host to a charity drive for Extra Life. By donating at least 10 USD through item or monetary donations, players may earn the Madness vs. Machines Hopeful Heart medal. Each time the charity drive collectively passes a $5,000 threshold, each player who has donated at least 1 USD will receive the Madness vs. Machines Boundless Heart medal if they haven't already.
Campaign
The Campaign was originally announced to deploy on May 17th, but it was further delayed to June 1st, so it could start at the same time as everybody's summer vacation.[2] It was again delayed to July 1st due to server maintenance and fixes and development resources invested in Operation Memes vs Machines; and then, shortly after, was decided that the Campaign will launch whenever the Campaign is fully ready to launch.[3]
On October 2, 2019, the Campaign has been released to the public as a "soft launch". Only USA servers were initially available, though additional servers on Europe, Asia and Australia were put online after the next few days.
The tentative date for the end of the campaign is on April 30, 2020.[4]
Approved Maps and Missions
This table shows the missions and maps that are currently in rotation in the Madness vs Machines campaign. Each mission awarded the player a set amount of tour points upon completion, with more difficult missions awarding more points. Maps in italic indicate approved maps from the contest phase.
Rewards
During the event, five unlockable medals of different tiers are up for grabs. These medals are automatically granted once the player reaches the tour points/contract stars threshold required for them. Unlike leveling campaign tokens, these medals are separate items, so it is possible to own all five medals at once. In addition, the Pinnacle of Ingenuity medal is awarded to all contest participants whose submissions were accepted into the campaign. The charity drive awards two medals as well, one for donating 10 USD individually, and one for passing cooperative donation thresholds.
Each medal has two styles, named "Normal" and "Gem Only". The "Gem Only" style displays only the gemstones, without the robot hands or metal frames.
These medals were contributed to the Steam Workshop by NeoDement, Sntr, Erikku, sigsegv, Jakapoa, Pelipoika, interrobang, Mayor Rev, Z-Ben, kratos, Nuke, Hydrogen, Hyperion, Potato's MvM Server, DaanBox, Swordstone, and Geel.

Update history
- Added the Madness vs. Machines community medals.
- [Undocumented] Fixed the Madness vs Machines Royal Rhodonite medal always using the RED team skin.
Medal distribution
There are six different medals that can be obtained by playing the Madness vs. Machines community campaign event or participating in the Madness vs. Machines contest, as well as two medals for donating to the charity drive.
Content creators (be it missions and/or maps) are also given out the donor medals as a "bonus" and the respective gem medal based from the number of missions they have submitted, and their difficulty (e.g. content creators who made a map or 2 advanced missions and 2 intermediate missions are given the Chaos Crystal medal; expert missions are counted as 1 advanced and 1 intermediate mission in this case). Because of this, content creators can gain up to two gem medals; one from the campaign and one from the contest.

- The Scorch Shot's knockback is not present in this event.
- A poll about disabling Scorch Shot's knockback in the Discord server owned by Potatoes shown that 119 voters supporting the change and 104 voters against the change.
