Types of items

Obtaining items

The most common way to obtain items is through the item drop system. This system assigns random times during gameplay for the player to obtain an item. These items vary from hats to weapons to crates. An notifaction comes up on screen after obtaining and item, showing you what item you have obtained. Items can also be bought from the Mann Co. Store for credit from one's Steam Wallet for real money, items bought from the store are un-tradable and cannot be used to craft other items (with a few exceptions).

Crafting

Another way to produce desired items is through the versatile crafting system. This allows players to craft unwanted weapons or hats into wanted products, like hats or metal.

Trading

The Mannconomy Update added an even more useful way of obtaining items, the use of trading between players. With this new system, you can trade your weapons, hats, and other items to other players for any weapons they're willing to trade for yours.

Customisation

The Paint Can tool can be used to alter the color scheme of items in the game. Currently, the paint can only be applied to hats, but Valve has not ruled out extending the ability to weapons in the future.[1]

The Name Tag and Description Tag tools enable the player to alter standard item names and apply their own descriptions to be visible to other players.
