The Frag Grenade, or Fragmentation Grenade, is a scrapped grenade weapon in Team Fortress 2. It is an army green "pineapple" grenade with a stripe of team-colored paint on its safety lever.

It likely would have functioned the same as in Team Fortress Classic, where it was the default 'regular' grenade for all classes and would simply create a small explosion akin to a Grenade Launcher grenade, possessing no special abilities in particular.

The Soldier carries two frag grenades on his belt which may have initially been used, but no longer serve any gameplay purpose aside from either being juggled via the Buff Banner taunt, which was previously the Shotgun taunt, or being ripped off his bandolier via the Equalizer's Kamikaze taunt, thus activating the non-existent pin so the Soldier blows himself up along with any nearby enemies. Additionally, the grenades were colored yellow to aid in players being able to visually target the class.

Trivia

  • There is an unused throwing sound effect that can be found in Team Fortress 2's files. It is the same sound used when the player throws grenades in Template:W.
  • Frag Grenades appear in several Meet the Team videos, most notably in Meet the Soldier where he uses them to illustrate several scenes in his monologue.
  • The Frag Grenade has a similarity to the Mark ll Hand Grenade.
  • The Frag Grenades are replaced with Holy Hand Grenades, a staple of Monty Python, when equipping the Lumbricus Lid.
  • Strangely, the Frag Grenade has no pin, neither does it have a hole for one.
