I want to do this, but I think I'll screw up. Should I download the split-screen version of the recorder? Edit: Okay, I've watched the normal Power Canteen video, and I have a few questions. 1. On the Engineer critical canteen part, how would I be able to spawn a robot that doesn't shoot instantly? 2. On the Engineer über canteen part, how would I be able to place a robot that I can control with shooting? 3. On the Engineer Buildings Upgrade canteen part, how would I be able to start the wave and not have any robots come out? 4. On the Engineer Refill Ammo canteen part, on the level 3 Sentry, would I be able to use a Wrangler, shoot all its ammo, then return with a default loadout and show it? 5. On the Medic canteen part, how do I spawn a bot that I can control and name Friendly Scout? 6. On the Medic Refill Ammo part, how would I be able to get the first person view of the bot? 7. In the video, how would I be able to take away the chat box so it doesn't say "[player] used [canteen]!"? Thanks ahead of time. Punishment Fatal (talk) 20:29, 13 June 2013 (PDT)

For the bot stuff, you should look at this. For the chat stuff, you should use the setting hud_saytext_time 0. Darkid (talk|contribs) 20:36, 13 June 2013 (PDT)
Thanks for that. I have another question though. When I try to download WeGame, it comes up with an error saying that my browser (Google Chrome) can't find that page. What should I do? Edit: Okay, I found out that WeGame was sold to Tagged and is no longer working. Is there any other sources besides Fraps that could work? I don't want to pay for it, and also I don't think Source Recorder can record me actually showing off the item in the loadout screen. Punishment Fatal (talk) 23:04, 13 June 2013 (PDT)
Yes source recorder only record in-game [...]. But i'll recommended you to use "Mirillis Action!" [...] it's a recorder which is similar as fraps but trust me Mirillis Action is better. User Karmacharger Charger 2.png Karmacharger 4:01 , 6/14/2013 (PDT)
Sweet, thanks for helping! (P.S. In future reference, thanks for giving me a little layout for the Battery Canteens). Punishment Fatal (talk) 02:32, 14 June 2013 (PDT)
Edit: I don't think I can take this recording job anymore. When I try to upload a video, it says that it's in the wrong format so I can't do so. Also, whenever I record, I have a terrible framerate (around 15-20ish), and my HUD's messed up since I had a custom one before I reset it, and deleting most of the files did nothing. Punishment Fatal (talk) 11:37, 14 June 2013 (PDT)
Youtube only support (.MOV .MPEG4 .AVI .WMV .MPEGPS .FLV .3GPP .WebM) what kind of video format do you used? .AVI and .WMV is recommended also there is another location folder for the hud Here (Steam\steamapps\common\Team Fortress 2\tf\download). in mirillis action make sure the record option is .Avi file format , 60 fps , video size original if framerate are still terrible Try using Fraps to record. It seems that valve removed the skybox we were using from the game files. I've hacked together a fix that uses the granary skyboxes instead - download this and and put it in tf/custom. i Changed item name through the tf_english.txt and it was supposed to changed in-game. User Karmacharger Charger 2.png Karmacharger 11:13 , 6/14/2013 (PDT)
Why do you need to change the name at all? Also, did you try this? Darkid (Talk|Contribs) 08:17, 14 June 2013 (PDT)
Because this demonstration will be same as Teddy Roosebelt‎ video. i'm trying to replace the name "Pocket Pyro" to the Teddy roosebelt. So that i can render the demo. User Karmacharger Charger 2.png Karmacharger 11:43 , 6/14/2013 (PDT)

Need to be redone

Buff Banner Buff Banner

Pictogram comment.png Should show you can hold the Banner and delay the minicrit boost if you hold down the mouse button.--Uknownada 00:53, 20 April 2013 (PDT)

Useful if true (I didn't even know), but pretty hard to demonstrate on video. Should be redone if someone can think of a way to demonstrate this clearly — Wind 16:00, 25 April 2013 (PDT)
Here's one possible way: Have a mini-video inset that shows someone's hand operating the mouse, and them clicking and releasing the button. It can be live-action or animated. Dogman15 00:17, 26 April 2013 (PDT)
Let's not do a live-action one, but animated would work, as long as it doesn't include any text — Wind 19:56, 2 May 2013 (PDT)

It won't be that hard. I actually learned it from watching TF2 videos. Just hold down the mouse button, and the horn stays on your screen. An example is minute 5:25 in this video.--Uknownada 21:08, 26 April 2013 (PDT)

I'm not sure if that's obvious enough, really. If you don't know what is going on, it feels like the buff banner is just being glitchy for a while — Wind 19:56, 2 May 2013 (PDT)
Maybe there could be a splitscreen with text in the top of each screen (similar to this video at 0:12). One screen would show the normal activation of the Buff Banner with "clicking the mouse button" in the top, and the other would show the Soldier holding the horn and walking around with it with "holding down the mouse button" in the top. That's really the only way I can think of to clearly demonstrate it. - Uufje 07:42, 3 May 2013 (PDT)
Let's go with that, but perhaps using icons like these except less phallic and more public domain. Could be used on both screens, staying there for both clips but with the button turning red when pressed on either screen. It's better to use icons than text when possible so that articles in other languages can use it as well — Wind 20:18, 6 May 2013 (PDT)

I really don't think it's a glitch. The Banner has always been able to do that. The Battalion's Backup and Concheror do the same thing (I didn't request those because I wanted this to be approved first). I'm sure you can be able to know what's going on.--Uknownada 23:34, 3 May 2013 (PDT)

I'm not saying it's a glitch, I'm saying it looks like a glitch to a viewer who doesn't know what is happening — Wind 20:18, 6 May 2013 (PDT)
I see. Okay, then.--Uknownada 15:44, 7 May 2013 (PDT)

It's just a small part; it's not that noticeable. Plus, it doesn't look horrible (like the unarmed combat). Though this might sound biased since this is my demonstration and I have no proper way of recording jigglebones :> - Uufje 14:21, 23 May 2013 (PDT)
It's pretty obvious - the handle swings all the way around, it's fairly large, and it's the closest part of the model. Besides, we aren't exactly drowning in work at present. — Armisael (T · C) 14:26, 23 May 2013 (PDT)

Uh...why is the Medic's uber like the Kritzkrieg's when it's a normal Medigun?--Uknownada 19:46, 6 May 2013 (PDT)
It is a kritzkrieg, because demonstrating the effects against an ubercharged, invincible, patient didn't seem especially effective at conveying that no drain effect occurs when the uber has engaged. — Armisael (T · C) 19:52, 6 May 2013 (PDT)

Would be more effective to show it from the medic's perspective with the uber bar shown. Same for the Spy; for all the viewer knows, the red spy on the right may just have decided to uncloak sooner — Wind 20:18, 6 May 2013 (PDT)

I hope I'm allowed to do this then. Third time lucky... TFHK 11:37, 14 May 2013 (PDT)
I'm currently working on this demonstration. However, I've noticed a few differences between my trials and in the video that's currently in use, namely the first part:
  • The teleporter that's shot (i.e. the one with lower health) doesn't make a sound when returning to toolbox state, and, strangely, neither does the other one.
  • The dispenser doesn't give a "used" red-tape upon being destroyed and returned to toolbox state.
Is there any reason for this? There's practically no difference between my set-up and the one in the current video, apart from the fact that an engineer is standing next to the dispenser (to show that the sapper stops supplying metal/healing after being sapped) TFHK 10:30, 15 May 2013 (PDT)

Questions and Proposals

Note: This section is for questions and proposals that aren't specific to a single weapon. If you think a demo ought to be remade, then make an entry for it in the Need to be Redone section above and it will be dealt with.

Archive

It's probably too late now, but wouldn't it have been a good idea to have something like "weapon archive" videos, sort of to show how a weapon looked before it got updated? It can be a nice tid-bit of history.--Uknownada 07:32, 6 May 2013 (PDT)

Some old weapon demonstrations are archived, but most of the old versions are simply deleted. I'm not sure there would be a way to show all those videos on the wiki anyway, nor if it's worth it. I think the update history section covers that well enough — Wind 20:18, 6 May 2013 (PDT)
Maybe you won't need to show it on the Wiki, but showing it on another channel as sort of an "extra". The update history section covers it well, but some people might have trouble imagining the Shortstop's quicker reload, or the Tomislav's quick fire thingy. You don't need it on the main channel. Or you could have them unlisted and "click here for previous versions" or something. Just a thought.--Uknownada 15:40, 7 May 2013 (PDT)

HUD vpk fixes

Anyone working with the vpk versions of the HUDs that were posted last week might have noticed that fonts were messed up. This has been fixed. Apologies. — Armisael (T · C) 14:30, 6 May 2013 (PDT)

Text

Why is there no text at all in the demonstration videos? Closed captions or something. Sometimes it takes a while for me to realize what you're trying to tell me. For example, in the new Vaccinator demonstration, it took a good 30 seconds for me to realize that you were trying to show at 6:28 that the Übercharge rate stays the same no matter what. A little text that says just that would've been helpful.

Especially when I look at the Buff Banner discussion I'm a little speechless. Why, Wind, just why is it wrong to have text? It doesn't even have to be in the video, it could be a YouTube annotation or something, but not having text at all? - Selbi 03:51, 7 May 2013 (PDT)

Not everyone who uses the wiki speaks English, and it's a tremendous amount of effort to maintain text in every language supported by the wiki. — Armisael (T · C) 07:50, 7 May 2013 (PDT)
That is a questionable argument, considering how the videos use both English text and English voice. If you really wanted to have the Wiki as localized as possible, you'd need to shoot every demonstration video multiple times. Thus I don't see the problem of having a few texts. I don't even mean them as demonstration leaders (arrows pointing somewhere and some text saying "look here!"), I mean as simple supporters of the what the respective scene is supposed to show. Completely optional addition. As I've said, this could be something simple as a YouTube annotation. And finally, I'm not saying you need this on every video out there, just those which could be confusing (like I pointed out in my Buff Banner and Vaccinator example). - Selbi 11:33, 7 May 2013 (PDT)
I've raised this before, look in the archives for something titled “subtitles” or something. Someone (I think it was Wind) said that if we use annotations, it won't be catered for non-english speakers, which is why we try to make it as “text-less” as possible. (weapon description being in english is unavoidable) I then suggested using subtitles that can be displayed in different languages, but he said that's not exactly the use of a subtitle will be. TFHK 20:00, 13 May 2013 (PDT)
Wiki do want to localize the content and make every kind of people understand. Isn't that the reason why the videos never have the subtitle? Watching the actions can make people easily understand the items even they are not good at English. If we try to set up the English subtitle, then there will be the need of localized subtitles, and I do not think these words can be created by enough people. About the confusing part in video, I believe it has properly showed every attributes of an item. Maybe reading the related Wiki page (and localized content if you need) when watching video could help? With the info in pages, I personally think the need of subtitles is slim. ~www~ 05:28, 14 May 2013 (PDT)
Why are the Instructional videos in English?--Uknownada 11:57, 16 May 2013 (PDT)

The videos try to be as language-independent as possible because:

  • It makes the videos embeddable on all language pages
  • Reshoot demonstrations in every language would be unfeasible, and the amount of duplicated work would also be horrible
  • It forces the demonstrations to be done in a clear-just-by-looking-at-it manner, which is a good thing. Sometimes that can't be done, and text is used in those cases

The instructional videos are in english because they really do need to give instructions to the viewer, unlike demonstrations. Thus, instructional videos should not be embedded on other language, pages unless subtitles are available (submissions welcome as .srt subtitle files, although this is not the page to do so) — Wind 14:10, 23 May 2013 (PDT)

Item Demonstration Picture Template?

I've noticed that there isn't a template for the pictures at the start of the video. Wouldn't it useful to upload it to the public? There's no harm in doing so. --Samuel Enthers 13:37, 20 May 2013 (PDT)

Thing is, it's not a template. It's User:RagnarHomsar (with some help from User:Pilk) creating each of those images :P Darkid (talk|contribs) 08:53, 21 May 2013 (PDT)
The start of the video is the loadout view. I'm guessing you mean the thumbnail on embedded videos, in which case those images are indeed created by RagnarHomsar. I have asked him to upload them — Wind 14:10, 23 May 2013 (PDT)
He does. However, it's not created by a template. Darkid (talk|contribs) 14:15, 23 May 2013 (PDT)
