"More Gun" is the tune the Engineer plays on his guitar in Meet the Engineer. The original version was released in the Engineer Update, and has since been updated twice. It is one of the song titles featured from the Team Fortress 2 Official Soundtrack, listed as track number ten, and is one of 33 main menu start up themes. It is the seventh track to be added via patch subsequent to the game's release.

Update history

July 8, 2010 Patch (Engineer Update)

  • This song was added as main menu music.

July 13, 2010 Patch

  • [Undocumented] Valve altered the song, using a harmonica, train sounds, and even a slightly tweaked melody of the guitar solo preceding the electric guitar accompaniment.

August 17, 2010 Patch

  • Valve added another new version, this time replacing the train intro with chirping crickets and the harmonica with a quiet accordion; the guitar is slightly tweaked again, but largely sounds similar to how it did in Version 2.

Alternate videos

There are 2 other unused versions added in the Jungle Inferno Update: One with guitar only, and the other with background tones only, respectively.

Guitar transcription

The following is a text rendition of a guitar tablature for the song. The Engineer is rendered using fairly faithful chord fingerings, which have been examined here.

"More Gun" is associated with the Engineer, and reflects that. With "folky" notated in the acoustic guitar part, the track is written to encapsulate the friendly, yet menacing nature of the Engineer's character. Several versions exist, though the acoustic guitar is always featured in the first three official versions. Each version omits or adds certain parts, including tuba or accordion.

Beginning with only acoustic guitar, the track focuses on a chord progression in A. The acoustic guitar continues playing on its own until electric guitar takes over, at which point the acoustic guitar becomes accompaniment and the tonality switches to A minor. After other instruments are layered in throughout, the track concludes on an unresolved B7 chord.

Other instruments are featured throughout depending on version. Version 2 begins with a passing train and harmonica, with the harmonica playing a counterline to the guitar until the modulation to A minor, and in version 3, accordion plays accompaniment to the guitar until the A minor modulation as well.

Trivia

  • The song is titled after the Engineer's recipe from Meet the Engineer: "...use a gun. And if that don't work... use more gun."
  • "More Gun" is based on "Someone Else's Song" by American alternative band Wilco from their album Being There. A cover of this track is included in the soundtrack of Poker Night at the Inventory.
    • Coincidentally, the lyrics to this song mention "...[sounding like a] song from a long time ago" - with Team Fortress 2 canonically being set a few decades prior to its 1996 release.
  • A remix of the tune from 1:01 onwards plays during The Calm, from 0:35 to 1:20.
  • None of the versions heard in-game match the original from Meet the Engineer.
  • The song starts in the key of A Major, and then shifts to A Minor when the electric guitar comes in.
