Team Fortress 2:n mekaniikat määrittävät säännöt ja kyvyt pelaajille, palvelimille sekä and sisältöeditoreille. Näiden mekaniikoiden sallii virtaviivaisempaa ja monimutkaisempaa pelaamista.

Pelimoottori

Team Fortress 2 pyörii Orange Box -versiolla Source-pelimoottorista, ja se on suunniteltu toimimaan PC:llä, Xbox 360:lla, PS3:lla ja Macilla. TF2 on optimoitu ja tasapainotettu 24 tai vähemmän pelaajan pelejä varten (18 Xbox 360:lla ja 16 PS3:lla), mutta palvelimilla voi olla enimmillään 32 pelaajaa jos se on niin säädetty (ainoastaan PC:llä/Macilla). Kaikki pelaajien toiminnot ja asetukset käsitellään konsolikomentoina sekä muuttujina, jotka tunnetaan nimellä ConVars.

Hahmoluokat

Vasemmalta oikealle: Pyro, Engineer, Spy, Heavy, Sniper, Scout, Soldier, Demoman ja Medic.

Team Fortress 2:ssa on yhdeksän pelattavaa hahmoluokkaa. Ne on luokiteltu "hyökkäys"-, "puolustus"- sekä "tukiluokkiin", vaikka tällä luokittelulla ei ole vaikutusta itse peliin. Hahmoluokkien ominaisuudet voivat vaihdella varustuksen mukaan.

Leaderboard class scout.png Scout: An offensive class with 133.33% move speed and 125 health points specializing in hit-and-run combat and objective-capturing. Can double jump and captures control points (and pushes Payload carts) at a rate equivalent to 2 people.
Leaderboard class soldier.png Soldier: An offensive class with 80% move speed and 200 health points able to adapt to a variety of situations. Can rocket jump.
Leaderboard class pyro.png Pyro: An offensive class with 100% move speed and 175 health points ideal for close quarters combat and group support. Can ignite enemies and never catches fire.
Leaderboard class demoman.png Demoman: A defensive class with 93.33% move speed and 175 health points specializing in area denial and damage output. Can sticky jump.
Leaderboard class heavy.png Heavy: A defensive class with 76.67% move speed and 300 health points that excels in dealing and receiving sustained damage.
Leaderboard class engineer.png Engineer: A defensive class with 100% move speed and 125 health points that specializes in area denial and support. Can create, maintain, and upgrade buildings.
Leaderboard class medic.png Medic: A support class with 106.67% move speed and 150 health points that focuses on improving the longevity and efficacy of team mates. Regenerates health passively and can deploy ÜberCharges.
Leaderboard class sniper.png Sniper: A support class with 100% move speed and 125 health points ideal for long-distance target elimination. Can headshot.
Leaderboard class spy.png Spy: A support class with 100% move speed and 125 health points ideal for covert disruption and assassination. Can disguise, cloak, and backstab.

Game code exists for a Civilian class, though it has never officially been included in any game modes.
