== Tournament Medal Dictionary Entries ==

Why did you get rid of a lot of dictionary entries for tournament medals? This breaks a multitude of things, such as my [[User:Boba/Selfmades|Self-Made item list rework]]. I see that a lot of entries got renamed, but some, such as the UGC Highlander Platinum 1st Place medal, are just completely gone. Please fix this. ~ [[User:Boba|Boba]] 20:28, 14 July 2021 (UTC)

: Hi, I fixed most of the tournament medal pages with red links after my edit. I checked now and probably there's a few more pages but it can be easily fixed with the updated name. I will add the missing names to the dictionary in order soon. Sorry :/ [[User:Mgpt|Mgpt]] ([[User talk:Mgpt|talk]]) 21:01, 14 July 2021 (UTC)

== Adding new availability strings ==

Re: your ask on IRC:<br>

It's a little hard to just add two-word avail strings, because the order of "Purchase" and "(expired)" may not be the same in all languages. The best solution is for you to create a dictionary entry for the availability (see, for example, {{code|craft-expired}} inside the [https://wiki.teamfortress.com/w/index.php?title=Template:Dictionary/common_strings&action=edit&section=4 availability names section].)<br>

Then, once you feel confident in the dictionary entry wording, and the name of the template parameter, sandbox your changes:

# Copy the current contents of [[Module:Availability]] into [[Module:Availability/Sandbox]]

# Add your new string into the main 'switch statement' (called {{code|lookup}}) by copy/pasting the {{code|craft-expired}} row.

# Update the docs ([[Module:Availability/doc]]) to add your new availabilities

## On the docs page, add new table entries for your new string(s)

## On the docs page, replace {{code|#invoke:Availability}} with {{code|#invoke:Availability/Sandbox}}

## Use 'show preview' to verify that your changes look good

## Restore the calls to {{code|#invoke:Availability}} (including your new strings, which will be broken!)

## Save the docs page

# Reply here (I am now watching this page)

# I will copy your changes from the sandbox into the main module

== Template:Dictionary Style Southern ==

Saw your edit: [https://wiki.teamfortress.com/w/index.php?title=Template:Dictionary/items&diff=3238973&oldid=3238971 "(→‎Cosmetic styles: This style is unique, while North Pole is used in 4 cosmetics)"] ;; i find your argument good and bad. for the default language it works. but in my language southern is translated as classic since southern doesn't make sense in that context. but if there is ever anything related to Southern then it would have different translation possibilities. and that is why i added the specifics for this item =>  southern - train of thought ;; yours works fine but i just wanted it to be specified for the item so other items could have the same word but different translation in other languages. [[User:Magicalpony|Magicalpony]] ([[User talk:Magicalpony|talk]]) 13:24, 15 August 2022 (UTC)

: Hi, the "Southern" string is just for the Train Of Thought cosmetic, so you don't need to add the name of cosmetic to the string, it is in the "cosmetic styles" section for a reason. For example, if TF2 ever gets a cosmetic with the same style, then we have to create the "southern - train of thought" string in the "cosmetic styles - duplicate" section. At the moment it is just [https://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Dictionary/items/southern being used] in the cosmetic page. You can also check the official translations in <code>/tf/resource/tf_#.txt</code>, or you can visit the [https://valve.crowdin.com/ Valve Crowdin] website. == regarding item name styles template ==

Hello Mgpt,

I am the main editor of the most pages you edited item name styles template.

The reason item name styles template are being used is just simply to display the "styles" in Chinese and add a link. This is being used in lot of pages. In earlier days there is discussions about changing "styles" zh-hans translation both in game and in wiki, although this eventurally did not happen, but the usage of item name styles are still being used, just in case anytime in the future the translation for "styles" in zh-hans is changed.

If you would like to change this, you can change them to {{tlx|common strings|styles}} and similar thing for links. Please do not remove them as that breaks the sentence.

If you have further questions, reply here or leave me a message on my talk page.

Thanks,

: Hello, the best is to use <nowiki>{{common string|styles}}</nowiki> in the "[[Onimann/zh-hans#式样|Styles section]]" instead of <nowiki>{{item name}}</nowiki>. In the styles paragraph "This cosmetic item has x '''styles'''... etc, etc", you should use <nowiki>[[styles/zh-hans|name]]</nowiki> or <nowiki>[[styles/zh-hans|{{common string|styles}}]]</nowiki>. I will fix the pages that still have errors, thanks :D [[User:Mgpt|Mgpt]] ([[User talk:Mgpt|talk]]) 23:01, 10 October 2022 (UTC)

:: I noticed <nowiki>{{item name|sniper}}, {{item name|cosmetic items}}</nowiki> are also being used, should be <nowiki>{{class name|sniper}}</nowiki> for the name and <nowiki>[[Sniper/zh-hans|name]]</nowiki> for the link. <nowiki>{{item name|cosmetic items}} -> {{common string|cosmetic items}}</nowiki> This whole use of item name/common string, I don't think its necessary. The common strings should be mainly meant for the sections and not to be used with the text, that's what makes sense to me, the same thing applies to <nowiki>{{common string|cosmetic items}}/{{class name|sniper}}</nowiki>, which would be for templates. [[User:Mgpt|Mgpt]] ([[User talk:Mgpt|talk]]) 23:57, 10 October 2022 (UTC)

:::Today I just translated all new cosmetics in recent Scream Fortress update, I used {{tlx|common string|styles}} in all of them, and used {{tlx|cl|scout}} to avoid class link {{tlx|item link|scout}}, however unlucky I tried {{tlx|cn|scout}} for "class name" and found out there's no such thing, and I did not know there is {{tlx|class name|scout}}. I try to use templates to replace all special noun because:

:::*There are unlimited ways to translate one thing in zh-hans, they are hard to remember and easy to confuse, it is time consuming to look them up every time, so I use templates to unify the word usages.

:::*Typing in zh-hans is hard and easy to make errors for all these special noun, especially for wiki internal links, using keyboard shortcuts to quickly type a template that does the same thing is much better.

:::I use regex to match and substitute contents to reduce repetitive works in translation since like last 5 or 6 big updates? I would say there are over 100 pages using {{tlx|item name|styles}}, hope it is not too much work! In early days I just simply replace them to things like {{tlx|item name|styles}} and it works great till today, so I guess it is time to update my code. I will still use templates in main contents for the above reasons. but I will try to substitute {{tlx|item name}} and {{tlx|item link}} to other templates for unneeded things in the future, and for cosmetic names/links or styles names these are not being changed from using {{tlx|item name}} and {{tlx|item link}}, since there's no templates substitutions for them. Thanks.--[[User:AlexT|<span style="background:linear-gradient(#D1EEFC, #81F3FD);border:1px #99F3FD solid;color:#007FFF;border-radius:8px">'''Alex'''</span>]]┋[[User talk:AlexT|<span style="color: #FF6600;">'''T'''</span>]] 02:25, 11 October 2022 (UTC)

== Limit error? ==

I don't understand the error you mentioned, when you reverted my promo nav template edit. It seemed to display perfectly fine to me; and the fact that Magic the Gathering had such a long name that it pushed all those other games forward was really quite annoying for me, so I'd like for there to at least be some way we can fix that, as well as whatever caused you to revert it. — [[File:User ThatHatGuy Signature Icon.png|30px|link=User:ThatHatGuy]] [[File:User ThatHatGuy Signature Talk.png|30px|link=User talk:ThatHatGuy]] [[File:User ThatHatGuy Signature Contribs.png|30px|link=Special:Contributions/ThatHatGuy]] 01:48, 18 February 2023 (UTC)

: Hello, some pages had [https://i.imgur.com/9odHjfk.png this] error, that's why i reverted your edit. [[User:Mgpt|Mgpt]] ([[User talk:Mgpt|talk]]) 13:37, 18 February 2023 (UTC)

:: That's strange, I've never seen that happen before, and it didn't happen when I previewed my edit. Is there a way to preserve the fact that Magic the Gathering no longer pushed the other names in its section forward, that my edit fixed, and still not run into this error? — [[File:User ThatHatGuy Signature Icon.png|30px|link=User:ThatHatGuy]] [[File:User ThatHatGuy Signature Talk.png|30px|link=User talk:ThatHatGuy]] [[File:User ThatHatGuy Signature Contribs.png|30px|link=Special:Contributions/ThatHatGuy]] 15:07, 19 February 2023 (UTC)

::: I know very little how the template works (tried to do something on my sandbox but nothing), and since the template is already at 32/40 on expansion depth '''alone''' (Parser profiling data) I think there's not much that can be done. Revert my edit if you want [[User:Mgpt|Mgpt]] ([[User talk:Mgpt|talk]]) 22:23, 19 February 2023 (UTC)

:::: You were correct that the nested subgroup calls in the template were beginning to be too much for our current version of MediaWiki to handle, and that we were beginning to brush up on the depth limit. To future proof this at some point, we'll need to upgrade to at least MediaWiki 1.38, (we are currently on 1.31.10,) and expand depth limits using {{code|[https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:$wgMaxPPExpandDepth $wgMaxPPExpandDepth]}}.

:::: In lieu of being able to create another subgroup simply for keeping Magic the Gathering separate, as Runner 2 had been, I think I've been able to find a compromise: I've solved the errors by getting rid of the subgroups with only one entry, and bringing everything else a tad bit forward, so that every category lines up, the way I'd originally wanted. It's not a ''perfect'' solution, but given our current technical limitations, it seems to be the best option -- and this way, it frees us up a subgroup to use, giving us 19 new promotional item sources; if indeed, they ever plan to accept more.  — [[File:User ThatHatGuy Signature Icon.png|30px|link=User:ThatHatGuy]] [[File:User ThatHatGuy Signature Talk.png|30px|link=User talk:ThatHatGuy]] [[File:User ThatHatGuy Signature Contribs.png|30px|link=Special:Contributions/ThatHatGuy]] 06:37, 22 March 2023 (UTC)

::::: I think it still happens, not that often, although it had a different and weird error with common strings if I remember correctly, upgrading mediawiki may be the only way to solve the problem as you said [[User:Mgpt|Mgpt]] ([[User talk:Mgpt|talk]]) 21:46, 31 March 2023 (UTC)
