Communication in Team Fortress 2 is a set of methods the player has to communicate information or ideas to other players.

The main forms of communication are the following:

Uses

Communication is helpful in various situations that require detailed or rapid communication, such as:

  • Warnings for incoming enemies.
  • Communicating with your Medic buddy to activate his ÜberCharge.
  • Coordinating an attack with a group of other players.
  • Rooting out disguised Spies.
  • Indicating the locations of enemy Engineer buildings.
  • Telling people the exact location of the Intelligence.
  • Informing teammates of fallen enemies or destroyed buildings.
  • Calling for backup.

Muting players

The "Mute players" button

The Mute Players dialog allows users to mute one or more players. Players can access this dialog by pressing the Mute Player button in the bottom part of the main menu. This allows the player to mute offenders just for they from voice and text chat.

  1. Press Esc to bring up the main menu while connected to a server.
  2. Click the mute players icon at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Scroll to the offender's name.
  4. Highlight their name.
  5. Click Mute in-game voice, or double-click their name.

Communication misuse

Any of these actions may result in a kick or ban from the server:

  • Spam / Blanking the chat (using large, invisible characters).
  • Playing music using external programs if your teammates don't want you to do that.
  • Verbally threatening or harassing players.
  • Screaming into the microphone to agitate other players.
  • Giving the enemy locations of your team.
  • Making repetitive trade requests in a non-trading server.
