Soon followed by the first Halloween holiday, TF Birthday was the first holiday introduced to Team Fortress 2. Since August of 2009, to celebrate the original release of the Team Fortress mod, the game automatically activates an annual Birthday mode holiday. While Birthday mode activates other game features, the TF Birthday Noise Maker is the only Birthday-restricted item.

The Full Moon restriction was introduced with the 2011 Very Scary Halloween Special. All previous items that were restricted to just Halloween were updated to be equippable during both Halloween and Full Moon. The items will be available for use during Full Moons according to a formula that closely approximates the lunar calendar, or servers running Halloween mode.

Since October 2009, Halloween is an annual Team Fortress 2 holiday. This holiday originally started a few days before Halloween, lasting a week or two into early November. The Halloween holiday now begins the first day of each October. When the Halloween holiday is in effect, Halloween-restricted items become visible in-game (these same Halloween-restricted items are also visible during Full Moon events). Originally, these items were obtained by picking up Haunted Halloween Gifts that spawned on Mann Manor, Eyeaduct, Ghost Fort, and Helltower. Holidays are special events in Team Fortress 2, usually automatically set within the game to coincide with a cultural holiday, birthday celebration, or other commemorations. Holiday restrictions are sometimes placed on items to enable players to equip them only for a specific holiday period.

Items with holiday restrictions have the restriction denoted in their attributes as "Holiday Restriction: [name]". The restricting of items was first implemented with the Haunted Hallowe'en Special Update in 2009.

Equipping an item with a Holiday restriction while that Holiday is not active results in the item simply not appearing in the game world.

Holidays

TF Birthday

Soon followed by the first Halloween holiday, TF Birthday was the first holiday introduced to Team Fortress 2. Since August of 2009, to celebrate the original release of the Team Fortress mod, the game automatically activates an annual Birthday mode holiday. While Birthday mode activates other game features, the TF Birthday Noise Maker is the only Birthday-restricted item.

Birthday mode can be enabled on community servers by setting tf_birthday 1 in the server.cfg file.
