The gist of it is, some real men, including me, did a lot of adventurous, heroic things. Then some arty-fart sad sacks drew pictures of it.
Saxton Hale[1]

Valve Presents Volume 1: The Sacrifice and Other Steam-Powered Stories, with introduction by Saxton Hale, then CEO of Mann Co., is a hardcover collection of comics from the worlds of Valve's best-sellers, Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress 2, and Portal. The book was published by Dark Horse Comics, and released on November 16, 2011.[2]

Content

... every comic we have made so far ...

The volume collects all multi-page comics Valve had published for these three games through August of 2011, just after Team Fortress 2 had been converted to Free-to-Play.

  • Portal 2 : Lab Rat (with a few additional art pages)

Additionally, most of the early single-page "comics" for Team Fortress 2, including Poopy Joe, The Insult, Dapper Rogue, and all of the Saxton Series comic book covers, are distributed throughout the book.

The TF2 Team[4]

Particular to Team Fortress 2, the selected comics cover the introduction of the major storyline characters of the Gravel Wars (the Administrator, Saxton Hale, Miss Pauling, Redmond Mann, and Blutarch Mann) and laid out the relationships and rivalries among the mercenaries. With this foundation laid, which included teases of Australium and the Life Extender Machines, Valve was prepared to introduce Gray Mann and extend the storyline into the Robot War (2012) and Her ultimate objective through the Team Fortress Comics series (2013 - ?).
