There is a huge influx of new members not abiding by the formatting guidelines we have in place. The new pages are being locked as it's easier for the Wiki staff to create them. -RJ 01:05, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

The description "the player can choose to equip the item with either the custom or the original name through the character setup menu." doesn't work for me. I can't choose "Vintage Kritzkrieg" for my named Kritzkrieg in the setup menu. (nanosheep_inc) 08:21, 2 October 2010 (UTC)


Name Tag Level 1 Tool

Changes the name of an item in your backpack.

This item is consumable, non-tradable and non-craftable (unless found).

This item can be used to permanently modify the name of a single item. Other players will see the name you choose instead of the original name.

This item is a Tool. It can be applied to another item in your backpack, and is consumed in the process. Click the 'Use with...' button in the backpack to start the process of applying it.

When viewing a named item in game, it will always appear in all-caps. If you look at it from an online backpack viewer, it will appear the way you typed it in. M-NINJA 14:50, 3 October 2010 (EDT)

Can Renamed Items be re-renamed?

You can as long as you use another Name Tag. Or so I heard -Mistah Phoenix 07:06, 2 October 2010 (UTC)

Default weapon naming?

Can you name a default weapon with a name tag? Like, say I wanted to name the default medigun, would that be possible? Or is it just randomly dropped items? Cleretic 15:51, 2 October 2010 (UTC)

Yes, there is a checkbox to switch to stock weapons. I have a renamed Knife in my backpack, if you would like proof. Search barbossarox on tfitems Barbossa 15:56, 2 October 2010 (UTC)

Ha, yeah, my friend named his Shotgun and managed to load both slots of the Heavy and Soldier with shotguns. The renamed one takes the primary (Engi) slot, no matter what class you use. No, it doesn't let you run around with two shotguns; you end up with the default Rocket Launcher/Minigun. I'd like to know what happens with the Pistol; the bug here might just be because the Shotgun is in two different slots in two different classes, while both the Scout and the Engi have [s]it[/s] the Pistol in secondary. Another point, if you rename a stock weapon then change its name back to default, the stock item remains in your inventory. Adding this to the main article though remove it if you don't think its needed Scatmanjohn 18:20, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

Can someone double check whether or not renamed shotguns use the old reload times from before the patch? I have a renamed shotgun and question whether that is true. Also, my shotgun loads normally with its name in the correct slot for all applicable classes. Hot Dork 23:38, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

I'd like to know that too before naming it. Anyway, I use the flaregun way more often as a pyro but since the shotgun seems to be shared among classes, even when it's renamed... BadDog 05:45, 14 January 2011 (UTC)

Crates and name tags

do you think it might be worth adding "series 1" to this? "Name Tags can drop randomly, be found when unlocking a crate"? Given that so far, series one crates are the only crates that contain name tags. Scatmanjohn 23:09, 11 October 2010 (UTC)

Re-Use of Used Name Tag

I named 1 of the hats I got from my friend after him. After a few minutes I realized I misspelled his name, I used another Name Tag on it and fixed it. The strange thing is, at the start I had 3 Name Tags, I used one (2 left), then fixed it and had a 2 again. I am not sure but I think if "you"(The user) name something twice while in your possession you will retain extra used Name Tags you have used. I'm not really sure how to say it.

Here's what basically happened:

1. Have 3 Name Tags
2. Rename Vintage Otolaryngologist's Mirror - SHAZ'S VINTAGE OTOLARYNGOLOGIST'S MIRROR
a. Two Name Tags left.
A. An attempt to make it seem like a real in-game item [In-game, most items appear to be in all caps]
3. Rename SHAZ'S VINTAGE OTOLARYNGOLOGIST'S MIRROR - Shaz's Vintage Otolaryngologist's Mirror
4. Two Name Tags remains.

As you can see, Name Tags seem able to be retained. Danton 14:04, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

Added specific note about name tag being consumed

I just got scammed by believing the other person when they told me that name tags will be returned to your inventory if you "Remove" the name, when in fact this is false. I looked it up here and nothing specifically stated it, so I got scammed in a trade. I'm adding a specific note about the name tag never being retrievable, so people know that you can't get it back once you use it.

Name Tag and Description Tag Similarity

The Name Tag and Description Tag look the same. I wasted a Name Tag on something i already "named" because it looked just like my description tag that I was supposed to be using. so i ended up renaming the item what my description was. This should be warned to other people that both Tags are very similar in appearance and everyone should be very cautious when using them and not knowing which one is which.--Awesome Weegee 01:57, 9 November 2010 (UTC)

Well, perhaps there should be, but most people would probably know it's a Name Tag or Description Tag just by the name of the tag. --Wintergreen 02:04, 9 November 2010 (UTC)

If you have an item with both a Name Tag and a Description Tag used on it, does the Restore function remove both the custom name, and the custom description, or can you choose them individually? If the latter isnt the case, it's probably worth noting on both articles. Mikau 10:36, 23 November 2010 (UTC)

i belive it takes off all of the items on it. including paint. i'm sure iv'e heard of several cases of people wanting to remove the paint and also removing the name by accident HyenaDip 10:38, 23 November 2010 (UTC)

Other languages possible

Just wanted to add that I tried some languages to see if it is possible to name items with non-latin characters. Basically because it's just written "40 characters", with no more info as to which characters might be used, so that's why I tried! So far, Japanese (kana, kanji and punctuation) seem to work whereas Korean gives a "only letters, spaces and numbers can be used". So I though I might share it with you. Some languages work, some don't. I tried Japanese when the tags first came and it wasn't working. So maybe it was added with an update. Future added languages one day, maybe? By the way, characters like "é, à, ô" seem to work too, if you want to name your knives with a French touch! ^^ Have fun naming! BadDog 06:01, 14 January 2011 (UTC)

Just wanted to add something to what you were talking about, and make a suggestion:
Do you think we could have a section on the article which discusses which characters can or cannot be used when renaming an item with a Name Tag? (same for the Description Tag). Since the Name Tag and Discription Tag are single use items, I'm sure people would like to be able to look up and see which special or foreign characters they can or can't use for their Tags before they use it. Whether it's a list or table of the actual characters (would be nice, but if the list/table would be too long then I could understand not having it on the page), or just a list of which languages are supported, I'm sure players would find the extra information helpful (especially if they really want to use special characters). Do we need the 'Nameable' line?

Not talking about this page in particular but is there any reason we need the nameable line item under the hat and weapon pages? To my knowledge, every hat and weapon is nameable and everything is not nameable. It seems like its just a waste of space.

Untradability question

If a name tag (or desc tag) are untradable, for example those given away from christmas a while back, and are applied to an item, does this make the item in question also untradable? I'd assume not, but this isn't mentioned anywhere on the page and I'd like to be safe.
