How long does the tribute end?

2
Soldurian (talkcontribs)

So, I was wondering how long the tribute went through?

The patch was released on the 1st day of May.

I'm not sure if this would count as speculative (or trivial), but I think Valve decided to only push this update when the month changed to May since Rick's surname is "May". Thoughts on this?

Dave1 (talkcontribs)

I can see why they'd do that. I could also see them adding every statue back to the maps yearly for the month of may. Perhaps, though, they might just add them back on his death date every year.

Hinaomi (talkcontribs)

It's pretty much a pun, as Mayday can be refer to him, an it's also to May Day (holiday) and Mayday (emergency) User Hinaomi Hinaomi-sig.png Rikka Takanashi (talk) • (contributions) 00:15, 4 May 2020 (UTC)

Thank you for mentioning this. I think many of us realize that, and think the same thoughts you have. However, I got the feeling that it trivializes the obvious gesture to actually mention it in the page. For English speakers, this particular element of the Valve Tribute is obvious from the in-game announcement and present text of the wiki article. But, some non-English pages might want to mention how this is part of the Tribute. However, recent experience with helping translators leads me to try to figure out how to let people of other languages and cultures know about such aspects without stating the obvious in the English page.

Suggestions?

Gabrielwoj (talkcontribs)

Also, there's also the fact that the tribute will go through the entire month of May and it'll end on the next month.

Mikado282 (talkcontribs)

"tribute will go through the entire month" I think that is covered either proposal.

Mikado282 (talkcontribs)

I wouldn't call it a pun /per/se/, but a special additional tribute made of the serendipitous coincidence.

The irony I noted, given /Soldier's/ persona, but not applicable to of these articles, is that May 1 is THE global Marxist Holiday.

Qwertyxp2000 (talkcontribs)

It would fun to think about that kind of way, but if it cannot be proven besides imagination then it probably isn't worth adding.

Boba (talkcontribs)

This is essentially confirmed, as this is set to happen every year during the month of May (as far as I'm aware)

Mikado282 (talkcontribs)

Boba: Please, a bit more on how you confirmed this. You may add me and forward it to me directly, if you want.

In the U.S. the whole month of May is a commemoration of military service and remembrance of the fallen. In 1999, Congress declared May National Military Appreciation Month. Our Memorial Day has been observed near the end of May since 1868.)

Mikado282 (talkcontribs)

Today is the U.S. Memorial Sunday, a day observed by churches to remember all of those who have passed, usually also with some memorial to military service. Tomorrow is the U.S. Memorial Day, the culmination of U.S. National Military Appreciation Month (May) , a day specifically for decorating the graves and memorials of those who died in military combat. It is also broadly observed within the U.S. civil religion as a time to decorate the graves and memorials of any and all who have passed, usually relatives, usually with flowers, but sometimes with other personal tributes.

While there is much focus on military services, this weekend is also a religious, secular, and civilian observance.

A main topic covering, in Valve's words, the "tribute to Rick May" was missing. The expansion of the existing Soldier statue to cover the whole of what is actually an Event, not just the statues, but the temporary Main Menu and the Soundtrack changes, now encompass the whole of what is now know. With this move, is it still appropriate for Soldier statue continue as a secondary subject of the page, and the statute remain as the image for the page. Reply to GrampaSwood:
I could accept split articles, but I strongly oppose refactoring the present Tribute to the format of a disambiguation. I would not want the Wiki’s lasting commemoration to Rick May to be a bullet list:

Tribute to Rick May may refer to:

One may be tempted to add some mention of voice acting, but that pushes the style and intent of disambiguation, making it more of a narrative. In my mind a narrative rather than a bullet list is more formal and gives the fuller respectfulness we all want for this. Recall that Valve’s statement posits that the entirety of the tribute is the changes for the interval of the month. The tribute is not just the statues, it is not just soundtrack, the tribute is the combined Main Menu and map changes for the month.
If split, Tribute to Rick May should be composed of the first four sentences of the present article:

With the May 1, 2020 Patch, Valve commenced a month-long Tribute to Rick May. Rick May, who passed away on April 8, 2020 from complications related to COVID-19, was the voice actor for the Soldier. For the month of May, the Main Menu class image is set to the main menu Soldier image, and the soundtrack selection is set to Saluting the Fallen, which is a rendition of Taps, a traditional salute performed at military funerals within the United States Armed Forces. Valve also placed Soldier statues on many maps for the month.

Which choice would you prefer if was your family? To me, the stark paragraph is paltry; but, is far better than a bullet list.
(Possibly, the bit about taps could be removed, but honestly, I included it there to avoid the boorishness of someone adding it as a Trivia.)
The remnant of Soldier statue lead could then read much as is was before I expanded it to the full tribute.
The Gallery image would be moved to the Tribute to Rick May page because it is the announcement of the entire Valve tribute within the game, not just an announcement of the addition of the statues.
I could hope that Valve would place at least an acknowledgement in the blog, if not some form of eulogy, which would also be linked from the Tribute to Rick May page.
Finally, I add for the benefit of those unfamiliar with the tradition: Many famous people get statues; but, Taps is sounded at the funerals of real Soldiers.

I uploaded new, definitive versions

Boba (talkcontribs)

The first uploaded versions of the images were fine as is. As much as I appreciate the effort that went into uploading entirely new versions, it's not needed at all. Cropping the first images would help a lot more.

the foundry statue is the incorrect map
