The item also does not have a 7 day wait when you purchase it. This is because the item is untradable. However, it can be traded using gift wrap. This is useful because if you are planning on getting it for someone for a specific date like Valentines Day, you do not have to get it 7 days early and risk them looking in your backpack.

It's ring-shaped, it's gift-wrapped, it's basically useless, and it's really expensive ($100!). In short, it's the most accurate simulation of an actual Valentine's Day gift ever made available to the public.[1]
The TF2 Team

The Something Special for Someone Special is a tool item, appearing as a silver diamond ring sitting in an open blue-violet colored case with a grey felt interior, traditionally associated with an engagement ring.

Upon use, the tool will turn into a pair of cosmetic items that can be worn by all classes in game.

The Something Special for Someone Special was contributed to the Steam Workshop under the name "Engagement Ring".

Functionality

When the Something Special for Someone Special is purchased from the Mann Co. Store, the player receives a Gift Wrap and a Name Tag to use on the item. Once gift-wrapped, the item can be sent to a person of the player's choosing. The recipient then receives a notification alerting them of the proposal, allowing them to accept. If the proposal is accepted, a message will be broadcast to all servers and as an alert on the main menu, noting the player and recipient's names as well as the name used on the ring.

Accepting the proposal

The tool is consumed and turns into a pair of gold rings with large diamonds, one for the sender and the other for the receiver, wearable on all classes as a cosmetic item with their names inscribed in the description: "A perpetual bond of commitment between [sender] and [recipient], forever and ever and ever. XoXoX". The rings can't be gift-wrapped or renamed again.

Declining the proposal

Currently, there is no way to decline the ring. Once a player sends the gift wrapped ring, the only options for the recipient are to accept or to delete the gift.

Only Steam Support can restore the ring to the sender's backpack if the recipient wishes to decline the engagement.

Bugs

  • It is possible to equip one of this item in both cosmetic slots at the same time. If one of the Something Special For Someone Specials is unequipped, the other will be as well.
  • If any Halloween Spell is applied, it cannot be removed.

Trivia

  • The expression "two months salary" originated from a 1947 advertising campaign by De Beers in an effort to stimulate the diamond market.
  • After the February 29th patch purchasers of the Something Special For Someone Special would still be given gift wrap and a name tag, however the ring would not be gift wrappable due to the patch and therefore could not be sent to a recipient. This is because only tradable items can be gift wrapped and the ring is not tradable.
  • Valve have patched the Something Special For Someone Special in order for it to be gifted through regular Steam Trades, and accepting in the recipient's backpack.
